On Saturday, October 10th, Beat the Streets Bay Area held its third workshop at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale as part of the “From the Bay to the Mat” clinic series, with over 90 students in attendance.

Two accomplished Stanford wrestlers led the two-hour workshop: Hunter Garvin and Angelo Posada. Garvin is a senior, a two-time NCAA All-American, the 2024 U23 Pan American Champion, and a sixth-place NCAA finisher. Ranked No. 2 by Flo Wrestling, Posada is a sophomore, an NCAA All-American, the 2024 Fargo Champion, the 2024 Super 32 Champion, and a sixth-place NCAA finisher.

Before the workshop, BTS Bay Area staff handed gear donated by Beat the Streets National to all participating athletes, including a shirt or a pair of shorts.

Throughout the clinic, athletes learned a variety of techniques from both clinicians. Hunter demonstrated an outside single-leg takedown, emphasizing how to finish the attack with a trip. Angelo focused on a collar-tie setup, showing athletes how to fake a high-crotch attack before transitioning into a quick single-leg takedown.

Hunter also covered top work, starting with a snap-down go-behind to secure a takedown, then a chop breakdown into an arm bar while maintaining wrist control. He demonstrated how to apply pressure and drive through the opponent to turn them onto their back.

To end the clinic, the Stanford wrestlers answered athletes’ questions about their wrestling backgrounds, personal experiences, and what lies ahead in their wrestling careers.

Our third workshop was a huge success, bringing over 90 young wrestlers together for a day of learning, skill development, and community building.

Thank you, Angelo and Hunter, for sharing your knowledge and experiences. It was another great opportunity for our Beat the Streets Bay Area athletes to grow in wrestling.
