On June 13, BTS Bay Area board member Cynthia Calvillo made her UFC flyweight debut as the main event vs. Jessica Eye. Eye was the current #1 contender in the division leading up to the fight. Beat the Streets Bay Area started in Oakland and the main reason there is wrestling in Oakland is Ashlee Sherman. We are honored to work with him and hope to be a great support to the sport in Oakland as he has for over 40 years.

On Wednesday May 29th, 2019 Beat the Streets Bay Area made a couple of large steps forward as an organization. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics has recommended that all three divisions of the NCAA governance structure add two sports — women’s wrestling, plus acrobatics and tumbling — to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program. If adopted, the sports would join the program Aug. 1, 2020. Our wrestlers showed up to wrestle at the Mid Peninsula Intermediate League Finals on Saturday May 16. We left the tournament with 5 medalists and the upper weight Outstanding Wrestler. Congrats to all that participated and special congrats to Nick Lum, Ramsey El Sokkary, Israel Dillon, Ziyon Davis, Micah Doe Parker, and Elliott Lewis. Montera and Westlake Middle School participated in the SF BAWA Mid-Pennisula Intermediate League match night at Cunha Middle School in Half Moon Bay on Wednesday. The two teams rode together and acted as one team for the event (unless they were competing on the mat against one another). Assistant Coach Denzel Mabry works with students at Westlake (photo by Leonardo Flores). We have started! Westlake Middle School in Oakland is the first program of the new Beat the Streets Bay Area. Tuesday March 12th was the first practice and the group of wrestlers at the school is small but mighty. Westlake has been open, friendly, and extremely supportive of our programs with Mr. Moses, Coach Mom, and Mr. San-Chez presenting a face to the school that is beyond admirable.
